Extract Frames from GIF
GIF to frames turns an animated file into separate still images you can inspect and reuse. Choose a GIF, run extraction, and review the numbered results. Each image represents a displayed state of the animation, rather than a screenshot captured at an uncertain moment while the GIF happens to be playing.
Many animations store only the small region that changes between pictures. GIF to frames combines those updates with the preceding canvas and applies the file’s disposal instructions. That gives you complete frames instead of isolated fragments. Correct composition matters for a character blinking, a cursor moving, or lettering appearing over a background.
Use GIF to frames when you need to inspect an existing animation before rebuilding it. Look for duplicate images, a missing transition, or an unexpected flash. GIF to frames does not invent intermediate movement or improve the original palette; it exposes the pictures already encoded in your file, in their original order.

GIF to PNG Frames
PNG is the default for GIF to frames because it keeps hard edges and supports transparent areas. A transparent GIF can retain that transparency in its decoded PNG pictures. GIF to frames cannot remove a solid background that is already part of the artwork; that requires a separate editing or masking step.
Choose JPG in GIF to frames when photographic content and smaller files matter more than transparency. JPEG output uses a white background for transparent pixels, and the quality selector controls compression. Review fine outlines and colored lettering before accepting a small file, because those details can show artifacts more clearly than a photograph.
After GIF to frames finishes, select the images you want and download them together. Each file uses a numbered name so ordering remains clear after unzipping. An individual download icon is available for a single still. GIF to frames also includes timing metadata in the ZIP, keeping pictures and their recorded delays together.

Animated GIF Frame Timing
GIF to frames shows the encoded delay for every image in milliseconds. Those delays are not necessarily equal: an animation can pause on a title, move quickly through a gesture, and hold its final pose. GIF to frames preserves that information instead of assuming that all pictures should play at one fixed frame rate.
The timing JSON from GIF to frames records filenames, original start times, delays, and dimensions for the selected images. If you exclude a frame, its neighbors retain their source timestamps rather than being retimed automatically. This makes GIF to frames useful for inspection, but you must decide how omitted frames should affect a rebuilt animation.
Some GIFs encode zero delays, and players may apply their own minimum playback interval. GIF to frames reports the stored value instead of promising identical playback in every application. When transferring an animation into another tool, compare the visible pacing and deliberately choose any minimum delay your destination needs.
When reviewing GIF to frames, keep source timing separate from your intended playback speed. A pause that feels slow in a banner may be important in a tutorial. GIF to frames exports the evidence for that decision without silently changing it. Store the timing JSON with the images, and test any rebuilt loop in the application where viewers see it.

GIF vs Video — Which to Use
GIF to frames is designed for animated GIF files, including small loops, interface demonstrations, and pixel artwork. GIF has a limited color palette and no audio track. A video can contain richer color, sound, and much longer scenes. Choose your workflow based on the actual source format rather than renaming a video file with a GIF extension.
For an existing short loop, GIF to frames gives you every decoded image within the supported limits. For a long recording, the video extractor is a better starting point for selected stills. GIF to frames is not a video decoder, and converting a detailed recording into a GIF first can discard color information before extraction even begins.
If your destination is a game or web animation, follow GIF to frames with the neighboring sprite sheet maker. Separate images are convenient for review; an atlas places multiple images into one texture. Keep the original GIF, extracted PNG files, and timing JSON together so future revisions can trace the artwork back to its source.
Try the toolGive each animation frame a purpose
Animation review
Use GIF to frames to compare poses, detect unwanted flashes, and inspect the transition between the last and first image of a looping sequence.
Design handoff
GIF to frames produces numbered images that designers can annotate individually. Send the timing file alongside the pictures when pauses and holds matter.
Interface documentation
A GIF to frames export can isolate a useful interface state without trying to pause a rapidly looping animation at exactly the right instant.
Use GIF to frames in three steps
Choose the animation
Start GIF to frames with a local GIF smaller than 30 MB. Decoding supports up to 300 frames and 80 million total canvas pixels; oversized files receive a clear error.
Inspect the sequence
Run GIF to frames, move the frame slider, and read each delay. Choose PNG for transparency or JPG for a white-backed photographic export.
Download your selection
Select all images or choose individual frames. Download a ZIP containing the selected pictures and timing JSON, then unpack it before importing elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
Does GIF to frames upload my animation?
No. Decoding and image encoding happen locally in your browser. Keep the page open until processing finishes, especially on a phone with limited memory.
Can GIF to frames export every image?
GIF to frames exports every image within the stated file, frame, and pixel limits. Oversized animations are rejected rather than silently returning an incomplete sequence.
Does GIF to frames retain transparency?
PNG output retains transparent areas represented by the decoded animation. JPG cannot store transparency and uses white instead. Neither option removes an existing solid background.
Why does GIF to frames show repeated pictures?
The source may deliberately repeat a visual state or use several updates with little visible difference. Compare delays before deleting images that contribute to the animation’s rhythm.
Can GIF to frames restore missing colors?
No. Exporting as PNG avoids another lossy encoding step, but it cannot recover colors or detail discarded when the original GIF was created.
Why did GIF to frames stop with a size error?
Decoded animations can be much larger than their compressed files. Shorten the GIF or reduce its dimensions, then try again within the displayed processing limits.
